EVALUATION

throughout this module I have been able to get an experience of gardening.I have learnt new skills and discovered what i like and dislike about horticulture. During this module I have maintained the courtyard by planting new plants, protecting the soil from frosting, removing weeds, and racking the leaves.I learnt new skills such as planting plants and maintaining them each week, I learnt how to build my own sun box and flower cup,I learnt how to remove weeds and i used many different gardening tools such as trowels, spades, shovels, cultivators, and pitchforks. I liked planting plants the most. Digging the holes and filling them with compost and then watching how they grow I found to be very enjoyable. one dislike I had was the keeping the blogs as when i went to do the blog i usually forgot what i had done during the last class and I kept falling behind in my blog as I forgot to do them.Another dislike was the freezing cold weather that we sometimes had to go out in it made some of the experience miserable and cold. overall though i very much enjoyed my experience of the horticulture module and the trips and classes were very interesting. I found the practical side to be the most enjoyable but enjoyed the whole experience.

WEEK 7

This week we turned the soil in the flower beds with a pitch fork and cultivators .and then covered them with cardboard this was done to stop the soil from frosting and freezing during the winter.we had to carry big rocks to stop the wind from blowing the cardboard away. Then we had to turn the soil with pitchforks and cultivators so that it was not already frosted going into winter. As we turned the soil we found weeds deeper down that had to be removed. After doing this we then went about clearing up the leaves from trees, that were  around the courtyard using racks and collecting them in plastic bags and then disposing of them in the compost bins.

HORTICULTURE WEEK 3

this week was  the third week of horticulture. we had to replant the plants planted in the first week so the plant beds had to be dug up the only plants left in them were the pansies. the wooden plant beds were filled with soil using the wheel  barrow. then we continue removing the weeds from around the outside of the garden. we used cultivators pitch forks and trowels to turn the soil and remove
weeds.

after this we began to replant the plants in the correct way to make the garden look organised and precise.

week 6 ccc horticultture

This week we went to trinity college with our horticulture class to see the science gallery to research and observe scientific experiments. experiments such as one that genetically changed plants to produce oil linked with horticulture. all the experiments were only portraying ideas and were not actual finished products. many of the experiments linked to nature and horticulture in some way. although we were meant to go to a garden expedition we still were able to observe different aspects of how horticulture and science could be used together.

HORTICULTURE WEEK 5

This week we made flower cups and sun boxes for the flowers to grow in. we mad the cups using bottles and paper. we brought compost to put in the flower cups and learned about what we could recycle incinerate and put in the landfill. We played a game on the computer to learn this. we plan to continue the theme of the senses garden in the sun boxes growing different type of flowers

we also played games and did worksheets to learn about how to dispose of different materials.

week four

this week we dug up the flower beds making a circler hole surrounded by pansies. we used trowels and shovels to dig the whole. one problem encountered when digging the hole was removing the rocks in the ground. we placed tulip bulbs in the hole going in a spiralling circle.

we then had to cover the bulbs with compost and then cover the whole with the soil. finally we had to water the flower bed. The rest of the class was spent maintaining the flower beds and the flowers planted previously also we continued to remove any weeds. another problem was the amount of soil that came out of the flower beds and ended up on the paths. this meant we had a lot of extra work sweeping it back on.

we had to turn and brake the soil on the three raised flower beds we used a rake to do this. we also used a rake when evening out the flower beds.

HORTICULTURE WEEK 2

In the second week of horticulture we moved on the the flower beds surrounding the outside of the courtyard.once again we had to weed the flower beds before planting anything, forks cultivators and trowels were once again used to remove the weeds. a rake had to be used to remove the top loose layer of soil covering the weeds.we planted plants that once again appealed to the sens of smell with more lavender plants, but also this time using grasses we appealed to the sense of sound with the grass blowing in the wind.

The plants were mainly small in size so where planted in neat groups of the same type of plant. each plants was about six inches apart.we worked in pairs one digging the other applying the compost.
major difficulties were encountered when weeding as the top layer of soil hid most of the weeds so rakes had to be used to remove this layer

we dug one big hole using spades about the depth of one plant for each type of plant. then the plants were placed in the whole about a fingers with apart.
continuing with the garden appealing to the senses, this week the plants appealed to the sense of smell. and the grasses blowing in the wind appealed to the sense of sound.other plants we planted were thyme witch once again appealed to the sense of smell

we then covered them with compost and refiled the hole.  then we watered them and continued weeding until all the weeds had been removed.

WEEK1 -

during the first week of horticulture we planted many plants such as:

  • pansies
  • lavender
  • curry plant
  • lemon palm

before we planted any plants we had to remove any weeds that had grown in the garden throughout the last year. we used trowels forks and cultivators to remove and turn ground. we then dug holes using the trowels and shovels to place the plants in. Each plant was a certain distance a way from each other to give the garden a layout and make it look sharper.
The aim of the garden was to peoples senses, touch, smell, sight, hearing and taste. The sense that we worked on this week was the sense of smell as the plants all giving strong smells.
To plant these plants we first had to dig a hole deep enough to fit the roots in, then we covered it up with compost and watered the plants. the wide range of colors and smell applied to both senses of smell and sight witch made the garden very appealing to all.
